Who would have believed that Pope Benedict XVI was apparently so opposed to homophobic persecution?
The following is a quotation from the "Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church on the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons." The Letter was written in 1986 when Pope Benedict XVI was still Cardinal Ratzinger, and it was approved by Pope John Paul II.
"It is deplorable that
homosexual persons have been and are the object of violent malice in
speech or in action. Such treatment deserves condemnation from the
Church's pastors wherever it occurs. It reveals a kind of disregard for
others which endangers the most fundamental principles of a healthy
society. The intrinsic dignity of each person must always be respected
in word, in action and in law."
This is the same Pope Benedict XVI whose representative at the United Nations opposed a measure calling for the global decriminalisation of homosexuality and the abolition of the death penalty for gay sex.
